The role of women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) has been a source of much confusion and debate beginning in the 19th century. While considering statehood, Mormons found themselves at odds with the federal government over polygamy. Despite the LDS Church’s 1890 Manifesto that signaled the Church’s gradual abandonment of plural marriage, polygamy is still practiced by some Mormon factions. However, many would argue that the polygamous wives of the 21st century are nothing like those of the 19th century.

Despite the legal and cultural issues related to the Mormon practice of polygamy, 19th century Mormon women played a significant public leadership role in LDS culture. Indeed, some would argue the role of Mormon women in the 19th century was the peak of their influence within the LDS community.

Paula Kelly Harline’s new book, THE POLYGAMOUS WIVES WRITING CLUB captures the stories of 29 of these women, drawing upon their personal diaries and writings to breathe freshness and color into their varied experiences. Harline considers the deeply ingrained domestic beliefs of Mormon women and the sacrifice endured for their children’s benefit. The author also asks whether the benefits of Polygamous marriage outweighed the greater cost of social exclusion and derision.

However, many of the accounts tell of a nascent sisterhood between wives that ignored the scorn of wider society. Polygamous wives often endured great societal and domestic hardships, but the accounts Harline exposes give life to much more than sadness and discontent.

Paula Kelly Harline has been teaching college writing for over 20 years for the University of Idaho, Brigham Young University, and Utah Valley University. She has also worked as a freelance writer and artist. She currently lives with her husband, Craig, in Provo, Utah.

It's the next play in Weller's Free Play Reading Series!

It the late 1800's, a very young Wendy Darling and her two younger brothers met the forever young Peter Pan who taught them to fly and took them to his Never-land where their subsequent adventures together have long since become worldwide legends. But in 1914 things are much different at the charming former home of the Darling family. Europe is on the brink of war. The three Darling children have long since grown up, but only Wendy remembers their time with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. Mr. and Mrs. Darling have retired to the English countryside and left their London house to the care and discretion of their eldest child, Wendy, who is more than just a little reluctant to part ways with her childhood home despite strong arguments to the contrary from both her now grown up brothers (who have lost all their childhood whimsy and sentimentality) and her American husband, Liam (who fears he and his still all too sentimental English bride are growing too far apart). It seems Wendy and Liam are destined to part ways until news from Wendy's lifelong doctor and a visit from a certain boy-who-never-grew-up combine to bring them back together closer than ever before. Inspired by J.M. Barrie's classic story, this new one act play picks up more than a decade after Peter Pan ended and shows us Wendy Darling's struggle to join the adult world while still retaining the magic of her youth.

Sponsored by Around the Globe Theatre Company.

James Brown, The Godfather of Soul may be the most misunderstood man in the last century. His contributions toward modern music pale in comparison to the role he played in modern history. Brown lifted all races toward the ideals of equality and opportunity. Tragically, while he had the ability to calm the storms of social turmoil - his personal life was a perpetual tempest; sex, drugs, rhythm & blues.

My Father, the Godfather: Inside the Godfather brings together, for the first time, Brown’s inner circle. They will correct the distortions of the past and provide the reader a clear understanding of the brilliance and generosity that was James Brown. This book will have you question your assumptions about politics, religion, sports, money and the entire entertainment industry. You will see inside the man. Written by his son, Daryl Brown.
