Betsy Gaines Quammen and David Quammen Live Virtual Book Tour: Anti-science and Pandemic
In the face of Covid-19, Weller's remains dedicated to providing as many services to you as possible as you self-isolate at home. In that vein, we are very excited to announce a virtual book discussion with Betsy Gaines Quammen and David Quammen on Facebook Live, Tuesday, March 31, at 6:30 PM, entitled "Anti-Science and Pandemic". The event will be streaming on our facebook page.
This is a virtual book tour series, with a different theme at each "stop". Our event, "Anti-Science and Pandemic", will focus on the science behind the Covid-19 outbreak, the origins of disease, and how our current anti-science administration and pockets of American culture have made our handling of outbreak so much harder. There is denial, apathy, and the proliferation of misinformation within conspiracy circles.
Betsy and David will talk about their books, American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God & Public Lands in the West, and Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Pandemic. They will also explore how science has been devalued by some people and groups, especially in America, since Darwin’s audacity in claiming that humans are a product of evolution. The Scopes Monkey trial in Tennessee was a spectacle in which small-town America challenged the teaching of evolution because it was perceived as threatening to traditional Christian beliefs.
In the time since that trial—almost a century—there has been a continuous strain of anti-science (in general) and anti-evolution (in particular) attitudes in some segments of American society, and those attitudes have spilled into the anti-vaxxer movement, climate-change denial, and now, a yearning to see this global pandemic of COVID-19 as a hoax. That yearning is inflamed by our science-averse and habitually prevaricate president, who has repeated the “hoax” claim himself. Nothing could be more endangering to people around the planet than claiming that COVID-19 is a hoax.
Join us as we dive in to virtual events with this important, topical, and lively discussion.
