Collectors Book Salon: Frank Pester
Book-lovers and collectors meet at Weller Book Works Collectors' Book Salons on the last Friday of each month, January through October. Serious and frivolous bibliophiles meet in our Rare Book Department for friendship conversation, edification and bibliolust. We start at 6:30 pm and at 7:15, an invited bibliophile leads the Collectors' Chat about a topic of her or his particular knowledge and passion. And at each salon there is also a special deal on rare books.
Weller Book Works Book Buyer, rare book conservator and all around bibliomaniac Frank Pester will conduct the collector’s chat during the June Salon. Frank’s interest in books has many facets. During the June Collectors’ Book Salon, he will discuss the beginnings of American Conservation as seen through the lives George Bird Grinnell, O.C. Marsh and John Muir. Frank recently read Grinnell: America’s Environmental Pioneer and His Restless Drive to Save the West by John Taliaferro, and acquired a collection of fine John Muir first editions. George Bird Grinnell’s life touched many of the historic personages and topics Frank collects. Grinnell attended paleontologist, O.C. Marsh on his first expedition to the West. He saw the decline of the American Bison and with the magazine Forest and Stream and Theodore Roosevelt, started the American Conservation movement. He, Roosevelt and others helped to found the Audubon Society. Grinnell and TR also started the Boone and Crocket club. Grinnell met John Muir on the Harriman Alaska Expedition in 1899. Frank has immersed himself in these men’s lives and the books that tell their stories. Join us on Friday, June 28th.
