Weller Book Works is closed to the public. But Catherine and Tony are working behind closed doors to keep the store ready to open when we're able.

We're still taking and filling orders via this website for new books or Biblio for used and rare books. At this time we can offer curbside pick-up or shipping only.

We are unable to consider used book offers until after we re-open to the public.

Collectors Book Salon: John Reed

Book-lovers and collectors meet at Weller Book Works Collectors' Book Salons on the last Friday of each month, January through October. Serious and frivolous bibliophiles meet in our Rare Book Department for friendship conversation, edification and bibliolust. We start at 6:30 pm. An invited bibliophile leads the Collectors' Chat about a topic of her or his particular knowledge and passion. And at each salon there is also a special deal on rare books.

In February, we will be pleased to receive another Collector’s Chat from University of Utah Associate Professor of History, diligent reader, owner of many books and friend of ours, John Reed. In the late 1950s, John was a "husky," un-athletic pre-adolescent. Son of a WWII infantry veteran, he compensated for his lack of masculine swagger by voraciously consuming mass-market paperback histories and memoirs of the Second World War, including many volumes of the Ballantine War Books series, with titles ranging from the prosaic "Battle of the Bulge" to "Japanese Destroyer Captain." As he "matured" and the Vietnam War intensified, he drifted away from military interests into the general foolishness of the late 60s. Oddly, in 2007, as a mobilized Army reservist at the age of 55, he found himself in Baghdad, Iraq. John Reed’s Collectors, Chat will focus on this extensive Ballantine series, the role these books played in his life course, and thoughts about the many other gems that await purchase in used bookstores from sea to shining sea.
