March Collectors Book Salon feat. Memory and Materiality with Lyuba Basin

Book-lovers and collectors meet in the Rare Book department for the Collectors' Book Salon every final Friday of each month, January through October. We begin casually around 6:30 PM with socializing, light refreshments, and shared bibliolust. At 7:15, an invited bibliophile leads the Collectors' Chat about a topic of her or his particular knowledge and passion. Each Salon, Tony offers a special deal on rare books that is only for Salon guests.

Two old books. One is in Russian and is titled War. The other is in English and is titled War ElegiesFor the month of March, we will focus on memory and materiality with Lyuba Basin, Interim Rare Books Curator at the J. Willard Marriott Library. Lyuba will pose (and attempt to answer) one of the most existential questions:  How did I get here? Her journey traverses scholastic book fairs and lunches in school libraries before seguing into the world of higher education – and a vault filled with more than 90,000 rare books! Along the way, several authors and titles kept Lyuba company, but a select few changed the trajectory of her path and altered her perceptions on what we read, why we read, and how we read. Join us for a philosophical study of the book as a physical object.
