Stephanie's Picks

-- The time is now to read this book --
You should read all the novels by Silko; there are only three, and the reward far exceeds the investment for each.

Set at the tip of the 20th Century where a well-kept whorehouse meets the Idaho landscape of Spanbauer's upbringing. Vsceral, magical, deeply personal in its confrontation of inner and outer demons. Spanbauer wrote this in an addled and fragile trance over the span of 4.5 years and 7 revisions. Dangerous, dirty and transcendent.

Excellent existentialsit read set in the Sahara. Way better than Camus. Think oppressive sun and relentless blue skies, peeled back to reveal the terror of space in a desert night. A welcome escape from the expectant angst of the cold, inverted SLC winer.
